White Yarrow
Achillea millefolium 


The aromatic fern-like leaves grow very low to the ground and the white flower heads stand up to 2' in height.  This tough little plant can be used as a lawn substitute with occasional mowing.  Selections are available with red, pink and yellow flowers.  Full sun.

*California Mugwort
3' stems grow from a spreading perennial root system producing insignificant flowers.  A medicinal plant for shade and moisture.  Drought deciduous and can be cut to the base after flowering. The pleasantly scented leaves are said to counteract the effects of poinson oak.

Red Columbine
Aquilegia formosa

A low growing woodland plant that needs some shade and water.  It produces red and yellow flowers in the spring which attract hummingbirds.  Will become deciduouse in dry situations.

*Coast Locoweed/Rattlepod
 Astragalus trichopodus ssp. lonchus

Growing to 2' in height and producing white flowers, this pea family member is a larval food plant for the endangered Palos Verdes blue butterfly.  Plant in full sun and give minimal summer water.

*Morning Glory (Calystegia macrostegia)
Growing from a single rootstock, this non invasive twining vine can reach 15' in length and can quickly cover chain link fence.    The PVP Native has small white flowers but the Channel Island selection  "Anacapa Pink" has large pink veined flowers.

Datura

*Jimson/Datura/Thornapple (Datura wrightii)

Dull grey/green leaves on a mounding plant to 2' high by 3 wide. Produces huge white flowers tinged with purple. Grows best in full sun in sandy soils.  Caution is advised due to poisonous alkaloids found in this plant.

*California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

*California Fuschia (Epilobium canum)

Growing only 1' to 2' in height,  this plant can spread vigorously to several feet with underground runners.  Produces red tubular flowers loved by hummingbirds.  Should be cut back hard in the fall.  Part shade to full sun.

*Everlasting (two tone, felt leaf and california) (Gnaphalium bi-color, canescens and californicum)
Three species are available that are biennial (live for only 2 years), but will re-seed themselves.  Felt leaf is very gray making it look rather "ghostly."  Two tone and Calif. Both have heavily fragrant foliage.
Lessingia


*California Aster (Lessingia filaginifolia)

A gray leaved, multi stemmed perennial that produces small blue fowers with a yellow center.  Attracts butterflies and grows in full sun.  Cut back to the ground in fall.
