Artemesia

*California Sagebrush
  Artemisia californica

This shrub is not a true sage but its silvery foliage has a pungent sage-like fragrance. Related to desert sagebrush, this species is found throughout coastal southern california and is a very important component of the coastal sage scrub habitat.  Because of a multi- branched open habit, it is the prefered nesting site of the federally threatened california gnatcatcher.  An extensive fibrous root system makes this a good slope stabilizer.  It thrives in full sun with minimal to no water and grows to a height of 3' to 4' high and as wide.  It can be sheared periodically to keep it more compact

*Dwarf Coyote Bush
  Baccharis pilularis 'Portuguese Bend'

A prostrate, locally selected cultivar.  Grows only 1' to 2' high but spreads several feet.  It is fire resistant and can be planted in mass as a fire break on the edge of a property that abuts native vegetation.

Baccharis
*Mule Fat
  Baccharis salicifolia

A large shrub with arching branches reaching 8 feet in height and wider.  Mostly planted in riparian areas for revegetation.  In a garden situation it can be pruned hard to keep in bounds.  Full sun to part shade.

Brickellia

*California Brickelbush
  Brickellia californica

A mounding and spreading  shrub to 3' high and 3' to 4' wide with lime green, soft leaves that have a pleasant aroma when brushed.  The small white flowers also produce a sweet night "perfume" in early fall attracting pollinating moths.  In the garden, mix with other coastal sage scrub species such as sagebrush and buckwheats.  Does best with full sun and minimal water.

Coreopsis

Giant Coreopsis
Coreopsis gigantea

An upright tree-like growth habit and bright green ferny leaves give this perennial a slightly goofy "Dr. Seuss" look.  But when in full bloom, it is literally covered with large two tone yellow flowers in a spectacular display in spring.  The next stage is summer/ fall dormancy, so it is best planted where it won't be noticed.  In its dormant stage it is often removed by gardeners because it appears to be dead.  It can grow from 3' to 6' in height and must be placed in full sun where it will be allowed dry season dormancy.  Native to coastal bluffs and dunes from Malibu to Central California and the Channel Islands.

Ericameria

*Mock Heather
  Ericameria ericoides

A woody shrub that grows 3' to 4' high and wide with fine needle like leaves.  Masses of small bright yellow flowers are produced in fall when few other plants are flowering.  This is a rare plant in the wild  since it's back dune habitat has virtually disappeared in the south bay.  Needs well drained soil in full sun.

*Palmers Goldenbush
  Ericameria palmeri

These two goldenbushes were known  as Haplopappus in the past.  They are covered with yellow flowers late in summer and grow to about 3' in height.  They are drought tolerant and evergreen and need full sun.

*Ashy Leaf Buckwheat

Eriogonum cinereum

A gray leaved plant that does very well near the coast and in difficult situations (steep banks/poor soil) with the bonus of  beautiful flowers.  Plant it if you want to attract butterflies to your yard because they love this plant.  This plant grows best in full sun

Eri_f3_resize.jpg

*California Buckwheat

Eriogonum fasciculatum

This plant flowers later in summer than most of our natives.  If you like to attract bees and other pollinators to your yard this is a good choice.  This species will grow up to 2' or 3' in height with narrow evergreen leaves.  The white/pink flowers persist to later turn an attractive rust color.
Likes full sun and little to no water.

Eriogonom
Giant Buckwheat
Eriogonom gigantea

Can grow up to 6' with ever-gray foliage.  Puts on a spectacular light pink flowering display in summer with the dried flowers later turning a rust color.  Needs full sun and very little to no water.  A beautuful specimen plant.

Eriophyllum

*Goldern Yarrow

Eriophyllum confertiflorum

A very drought tolerant evergreen perennial with yellow flower heads.  The light green finely divided foliage is attractive.  Full sun to light shade.

Eriophyllum

Catalina Silver Lace
Eriophyllum nevinii

A "dusty miller" type of mounding shrub with silvery/gray lacy foliage and clustered bright yellow flowers.  A native of catalina island .  A tough plant that looks delicate. Does well in full sun or part shade.

*Coast Buckwheat
  Eriogonum parvifolium

This attractive plant should be encouraged in coastal areas of the peninsula not only because it is tough  and drought tolerant, but is also the larval food plant of the endangered El Segundo Blue butterfly.  It's pink flowers in late summer are set off nicely with green leaves with a tinge of red.  Full sun is best and good drainage essential.
