*Toyon

  Heteromeles arbutifolia

Also known as California Holly and Christmas Berry, toyon can grow to 15' as a multi- trunked shrub or to 25' as a single trunk tree.  It is evergreen, fire resistant and produces beautiful clusters of red berries that are an important winter food source for some of our native birds.

*Southern California Walnut
  Juglans californica

This is not the commercial nut tree, but it does produce a small edible nut that birds and other wildlife will enjoy.  It is a small (20' to 30') multi-trunked, deciduous tree that should not be planted near walks or driveways.  It can thrive in poor dry soils once established.

*Laurel Sumac
  Malosma laurina

Forms a natural, round canopy to 15' in height and width if not pruned into tree form.  Since it is extremely drought tolerant, attractive to birds and is also pest free, this tree should be planted in more home landscapes where room permits.

Populus

*Freemont Cottonwood
  Populus fremontii

A fast growing riparian tree up to 50' tall.

Prunus

Catalina Cherry

Prunus Ilicifolia ssp.lyonii
A very versatile tree that can become a large single trunk tree to 30' or more, but can also be sheared into a hedge.  It has evergreen, bright green foliage and edible, purple cherries (alot of pit and very little meat.)  The white flowers attract bees and other insects, while the fruit is attractice to birds.  Another plus is the fact that it is very fire resistant.  Full sun.

Quercus

*Coast Live Oak
  Quercus agrifolia

This is an evergreen native oak that is well suited to Southern California coastal areas.  It has glossy holly-like leaves and produces catkins (flower spikes) that later become acorns.  Native Americans of Southern California depended on acorns as their staple food.  Great tree for birds and other animals.  Full sun and no supplemental water once established.  It needs a large area for it's spreading limbs and can grow up to 70' high and as wide.  With Time it will grow into a beautiful shade tree.

Salix

*Arroyo Willow
  Salix lasiolepsis

A deciduous tree to 20' in height for riparian situations especially usefull for restoration in canyons with seasonal or permanent streams.  Only for homeowners whose properties include the above situation because these trees can be messy and growth habit is rangy unless well pruned.
This is a great habitat tree providing food and shelter for many insects and birds.  Also, it was once an important source of tools, building materials and medicine (aspirin) for Native Americans.
Plant in full sun where it can get plenty of water.

Sambucas

*Elderberry

A small tree that grows up to 25' with a fountainlike shape that can be pruned severely to keep it more shrub-like.  It naturally grows in canyons, so it is tolerant of shade and extra water.  If it becomes drought stressed it will become deciduous. Cream colored, fragrant flowers are followed by bluish fruit that are prized by birds.  Full sun to part shade.
