*Lemonadeberry (Rhus integrifolia)
As its name implies, the berries soaked in water make a tasty drink if sugar is added.  Very common in Palos Verdes, this member of the Sumac family does fine without watering; but it can be a fire retardant with irrigation.  It can be pruned to conform to many situations. Plant in full sun.

Rosa

*California Rose (Rosa californica)

Our native rose has an upright habit to 3' in height but it's ability to spread by underground runners and back curved spines make it best used in wild gardens or in contained spaces..  Full sun to part shade, it produces beautiful "simple" pink flowers that are followed by bright red fruits (hips).

Salvia

White Sage
(Salvia apiana)

A strongly scented plant with light gray foliage and whitish flowers on long spikes that attract bees and hummingbirds and grows densely to 4'x4'.  An important ceremonial plant to Californian Native Americans.  Plant in full sun.

Salvia

*Black Sage (Salvia mellifera)

Despite its common name, this sage has light blue flowers. The dark green leaves are strongly aromatic. The species name means "honey producing", so you can count on lots of bees.  Plant in full sun.

Symphocarpus
*Snowberry (Symphocarpus mollis)
This is a good plant for banks subject to erosion, since it quickly forms a dense thicket by underground runners.  The fruit are an important source of food and cover for wildlife.  Does best in part shade.
